2026 Point-In-Time (PIT) Count Volunteers

Description

Each year, the Mid-Alabama Coalition for the Homeless (MACH) along with its nonprofit partners performs a Point-in-Time (PIT) Count in January of all homeless individuals living on the streets who are unsheltered or are in temporary shelter housing. The PIT Count engages concerned citizens and agencies in the River Region working to eradicate homelessness to help estimate the size of the population in need of housing and critical life supports.

Why We Count:

  • To better understand homelessness in our community in order for individuals to receive the services they need to get help and be placed into housing.
  • To determine the congressional homeless funding the County receives.
  • To comply with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) requirements for Continuum of Care.

Volunteers must be willing to:

  • Complete Point in Time Count orientation/training.
  • Participate in the count.
  • Survey people experiencing homelessness in a respectful manner.
  • Stay the entire time they are scheduled to volunteer.
  • Volunteers will ride in groups in an agency vehicles and will not be able to drive their own vehicle during the count.
  • Volunteers also must be aware there is no guarantee they will be in the same vehicle with other co workers.
