Who We Are

The Alabama Historical Commission is the state agency charged with safeguarding Alabama’s historic buildings and sites.

What We Do

The Freedom Rides Museum is located in Montgomery's historic former Greyhound bus station. In 1961, an integrated group of activists called Freedom Riders came here attempting to end segregation on interstate transit. At the Montgomery Greyhound station, they were attacked and beaten by a white supremacist mob. The violence shocked the nation, and the courage of the Riders pressured the Kennedy administration into more forcefully supporting the struggle for civil rights.
